We transformed our basement into a home gym/ exercise room & office. This is a simple & inexpensive DIY project for our farmhouse in the suburbs. It has already been such a blessing now with our family home from school & work.

Because we live in a very old farmhouse, we don’t have a traditional basement like most homes have. What we call our basement is a room off our driveway that was many years ago the barn, then garage, then a home office & more recently what we call our basement.
Below is a picture of what our basement looked like a few years after moving in with all the toys picked up…
Over the years, our “basement” has worn many hats. Toy, TV, guest & game room as well as Jason’s office.
As the kids have gotten older our needs for this room have definitely changed. Our 4 kids….at least the older 2 boys have shelved their Legos & toys for exercise equipment & video games. They grow up way too fast!!!
With the kids home from school indefinitely, we needed a spot to exercise & let out some energy especially when the weather is bad & they can’t be outside!
The first thing we did was clear out the room. We moved the sofa & chair up to our master bedroom & created a sitting area up there. (reveal coming soon) The kids never sat on the sofa anyway! I always found them on bean bag chairs or the floor.
The rest of the furniture, books & Legos were either given to friends or we hope to donate when thrift stores open again.
Jason & I painted the ceiling, walls, windows, doors & trim! The previous ceiling was a glossy light blue & looked terrible. We painted the ceiling a basic ceiling white. We painted the trim, windows & doors a semi gloss white & the walls are Kilim Beige from Sherwin Williams.
What a difference a newly painted room & ceiling makes!!! We also spray painted our black recessed lights white to match the ceiling. (diy here)
He also changed our sliding closet door into a hinged closet so we can roll out our ping pong table easily! The kids needed help getting anything out of this closet before & now they can do it all by themselves!!! (here is the DIY post for how to transform closet doors)
Jason transformed our large Ikea bookcase into an entertainment center & that we can stream yoga & exercise videos from. (diy here)
Baskets & wooden boxes do a fantastic job to keep everything organized!
He also created a DIY wooden basketball hoop for the kids to play indoor basketball. (diy here)
In lieu of a carpet we decided to keep the laminate wood floors bare & get a large exercise mat instead. The exercise mat is great for yoga or sit ups & can easily roll to the side when the kids want to play basketball or ping pong. Here is the exercise mat we have,Premium Extra Large Exercise Mat – 7′ x 5′ x 1/4″ Ultra Durable, Non-Slip, Workout Mats for Home Gym Flooring – Jump, Cardio, MMA Mat – Use with or Without Shoes (84″ Long x 60″ Wide x 6mm Thick)
The large exercise mat we have fits 4 of us comfortably. When we are all exercising we add 2 small yoga mats to either side.
Thankfully, a previous owner add heated floors to this room so it is very cozy in the winter even without a carpet!
Jason still does most of his working from home in this room so we kept his awesome space saving Pallet desk. (diy here)
We recently changed out our wood Ikea chairs for “real desk chairs” from Amazon.
Not as pretty but definitely more comfortable when working from home all week.Flash Furniture Mid-Back Black Mesh Swivel Ergonomic Task Office Chair with Flip-Up Arms, BIFMA Certified
We have wasted no time in using this newly refreshed space! Our family has already enjoyed many family workouts, yoga sessions, video game tournaments, ping pong & basketball games in this room. we ordered a free trial of the Peloton app & our whole family is enjoying it!
It is our hope that we will continue to enjoy this room for many more days to come!!!
