Hi everyone! I am excited to share with you that I am a new member of a monthly DIY blogger challenge called CREATE and SHARE. This challenge is hosted by Stephanie who blogs at Casa Watkins and takes place the last Wednesday of every month. The challenge for February was to paint something using Wise Owl Chalk Synthesis Paint. A big Thank You to Wise Owl for providing me with a can of chalk synthesis paint, a tin of furniture wax and an amazing Cling on paint brush. As always my opinions on paint colors and paint brushes are 100% my own:). For more information, click here. Wise Owl also provided me with a sample of hemp seed oil to use in case I wanted to darken the furniture I was refinishing. Unfortunately, Moose found and managed to chew through the plastic hemp seed oil container while laying on our white duvet cover!!! ( insert shaking head emoji here) I am sure he was only trying to help me open the container:).
*Make sure you scroll down to the bottom of this post to see what my other blogging friends created using their Wise Owl Synthesis Chalk Synthesis Paint! There is also a giveaway at the bottom of this post for 1 pint Wise Owl paint, 1/2 pint of paint, choice of wax, and cling on brush!!!!!
I chose to paint the cedar chest that we keep in our master bedroom. The cedar chest was originally my Great Grandmother Nana Kay’s and at some point it had been painted blue. My mom gave it to me soon after we were married and I have loved storing homemade quilts and baby blankets and anything else we want to preserve in there:).
When our first puppies were little they definitely did a number on one of the claw feet and I have been telling Jason for years that I wanted to paint it!
I chose the Wise Owl Synthesis Chalk Paint Republic Red color because I thought it would match the other pops of red we have in the master bedroom and all over my house. If you have been reading along on my blogging journey at all you know how I am trying to make peace with the color red:). You can read more about that here. This was my first time painting with chalk paint (What?!) and I absolutely loved it and will absolutely be using chalk paint again!!! There is almost no prep work (Yay!), it coats imperfections really well and it dries super quickly!!!
I also loved that I could paint the chest in the middle of our master bedroom using just a drop cloth to protect my pine floors and my house didn’t smell like a chemical factory. I didn’t have to take this piece of furniture out to the garage like every other piece of furniture we redid:). Here’s a little more about Wise Owl Synthesis Chalk paint According to their site…
“Wise Owl Chalk paint is free of harsh chemicals and solvents. Our versatile paint is zero VOC, we offer solvent free waxes made from local beeswax, and hemp seed oil produced without unnecessary fillers or preservatives. We would like our consumers to feel good about painting and be able to do so without compromising health or the environment to do so.”
I started by lightly sanding the chest where the paint had been chipping off for years. The above pic is after one of coat of wise owl republic red. I then added a second coat of the Republic Red Chalk Paint.
It covered over the chipped and chewed sections of the chest perfectly! I also loved, I do mean loved:) the cling on paint brush they sent. I have used many brushes through the years and this brush was easy to hold painted well and cleaned up very easily.
I then added two coats of the hemp oil furniture wax with an old diaper cloth to help protect the red paint.
What do you guys think of our new cedar chest? Do you like the Republic Red color?
