Cedar Chest Before
I chose to paint the cedar chest that we keep in our master bedroom.
The cedar chest was originally my Great Grandmother Nana Kay’s & at some point it had been painted blue.
My mom gave it to me soon after we were married & I have loved storing homemade quilts, baby blankets & anything else we want to preserve in there.
When our first puppies were little they definitely did a number on one of the claw feet and I have been telling Jason for years that I wanted to paint it!
Cedar Chest Makeover Paint Color
I chose the Wise Owl Synthesis Chalk Paint Republic Red color because I thought it would match the other pops of red we have in the master bedroom and all over my house.
Painting with Chalk Paint
I started by lightly sanding the chest where the blue paint had been chipping off for years.
This was my first time painting with chalk paint (What?!) & I absolutely loved it & will absolutely be using chalk paint again.
There is almost no prep work (Yay!), it coats imperfections really well & it dries super quickly!!!
I also loved that I could paint the chest in the middle of our master bedroom using just a drop cloth to protect my pine floors & my farmhouse didn’t smell like a chemical factory.
I didn’t have to take this piece of furniture out to the garage like every other piece of furniture we redid.
Here’s a little more about Wise Owl Synthesis Chalk paint according to their site…
“Wise Owl Chalk paint is free of harsh chemicals and solvents. Our versatile paint is zero VOC, we offer solvent free waxes made from local beeswax, and hemp seed oil produced without unnecessary fillers or preservatives. We would like our consumers to feel good about painting and be able to do so without compromising health or the environment to do so.”
The above pic is after one of coat of wise owl republic red. I then added a second coat of the Republic Red Chalk Paint.
It covered over the chipped & chewed sections of the chest perfectly!
I also loved, I do mean loved:) the cling on paint brush they sent.
I have used many brushes through the years & this brush was easy to hold painted well & cleaned up very easily.
I then added two coats of the hemp oil furniture wax with an old diaper cloth to help protect the red paint of our cedar chest makeover.
I hope this inspires you to give your cedar chest a makeover with chalk paint!

So awesome! Did you sand before waxing? Not everyone like the extra step but I always lightly sand the paint with 350 or above sandpaper to give the wax a smooth application. I don’t spend more than a few minutes… just to fill some of the pore space found in mineral paints. The hemp oil wax will give you extra protection compared to other wax finishes. Such a Cool piece! Thanks for being part of such a fun blog event!
Thanks so much for stopping by to see the cedar chest I painted using your Wise Owl Paint Karen! I did not sand my piece before waxing, I will definitely try that next time:). Thanks for the tip! I did already start painting a shelf in my kitchen with the leftover Republic red because I liked the color so much. Thank you so much for sending me the paint, wax and paint brush! Have a great weekend and take care, Tara
