Create and Share - Walnut Hollow - DIY Rustic Sign

Hi everyone!  I am back to share a DIY Rustic boy’s sign I made for my son’s room as part of the monthly Create and Share DIY Challenge I am a member of:).  Our challenge is hosted by my friend Stephanie from Casa Watkins.  This month’s sponsor is Walnut Hollow, who provides “high quality unfinished wood products, tools & accessories for the craft and hobby industries.”

A big thank you to Walnut Hollow for providing me with a Walnut Hollow Basswood Country Rounds (Medium)
and a Walnut Hollow Creative Woodburner Introduction Value Pen for Beginners and Intermediate Woodburners.
As always my opinions about wood slices and wood burning are completely my own:).

This was my first time using a woodburner and I am not going to lie I was definitely intimated by it:).  It was very easy to use after a short time practicing with it I was ready to create with it on my Basswood Round.  I decided to make a Rustic sign for my son’s bedroom.  I thought it would be fun to create the sign about a tree since I was writing on… a tree:).  I created the quote based on some different quotes I found on Pinterest and Psalm 1:2-3 “When you delight in the Word, and meditate on it day and night, THEN… you will be like a tree firmly planted.”

Once I knew what I was adding to the Basswood Round, I drew the tree and quote to the wood with a pencil.  After I was done penciling in my tree and quote, I burned the wood on top of the pencil with the woodburner.  It took me less than an hour to complete this sign so it’s an easy project to do while watching TV after the kiddos are in bed:).

After trying unsuccessfully to erase the pencil marks left after burning the wood I lightly sanded the wood thanks to a suggestion from a friend.  Sanding worked perfectly!  Just make sure to not sand it too much or you will sand some of your picture.

I cut a small piece of ribbon an used a thumbtack to hang the Basswood Round to the wall.

The rustic wood goes well with the rustic wood built in desk we created for Ben’s room.

  1. I love the look of your son’s new sign, and the message is perfect! You tied everything together really well, and I’m super impressed with your wood burning – I always have so much trouble using those, especially for lettering!

  2. This is such a great project, Tara! I love that you used tree quotes on a piece of a tree! 🙂 It looks wonderful in your son’s room (and I love the wall color in there)! Pinned and shared.
