Sharing how I created a Pottery Barn Inspired DIY Roman Shade Makeover for just $15. It was an easy no sew, cordless DIY makeover on a budget.
Last week I shared the final reveal of Ryan’s built in blue bedroom & shared a picture of the DIY roman shade I made for Ryan’s room.
Since we moved in our old farmhouse all that was covering his window was a cheap plastic mini blind & I could not wait to have something nicer covering his one & only window.
I really loved the RH shade I found for Tucker’s built in window seat & was determined to add a roman shade to Ryan’s room.
I found a striped roman shade from Pottery barn kids that was perfect, except for the price so I decided to make one of my own for $15.

Supplies Needed for a DIY Roman Shade Makeover
- basic white roman shade
- ruler
- pencil
- painter’s tape
- navy acrylic paint
- paint brush
Rather than making one from scratch I found a basic white roman shade at Ikea for $15. (You can find the one we bought here)
I still wanted to add stripes to the shade & rather than sewing them on I chose to use acrylic paints.
Step by Step Instructions for How to Make a Pottery Barn Inspired DIY Roman Shade Makeover
Step ONE – Measure Lines for Blue Lines
First I measured with a pencil two lines of stripes on both sides.
I measured 3″ in from the sides, then 4″, 4.5″ and 5.”
I added pencil marks every 6″ or so down the length of the shade.
Step TWO – Add Painter’s Tape
I added the painters tape next to the pencil marks starting with the wider stripes on the end first.
Make sure the painters tape is tight against the fabric.
Step THREE – Paint your DIY Roman Shade
Next I painted the stripes one row at a time using navy acrylic paint and a foam brush.
Note to self – Lay a drop cloth that covers the whole table next time 🙂
It came clean with a baby wipe.
I pulled off the blue painter’s tape & painted the smaller stripe next.
Step FOUR – Let your DIY Roman Shade Dry Overnight
I let the roman shade dry overnight.
Step FIVE – Hang on your Window
I hung it on the window.
I love the pops of blue it adds to Ryan’s Hale Navy wall.
How do you think it looks?

Such a great idea to just embellish an inexpensive Roman shade instead of starting from scratch. This came out great. Nice touch added to your son’s room. Also, congrats on completing the ORC, Tara!
Thanks so much Tee!!!
It looks great. I’ve made a Roman Shade before and they are not easy!!!
