To help celebrate the birth of our nation and decorate my family room mantel I made this super simple and cheap star garland.
Supplies & Tools Needed to Make this DIY Star Garland
- One big piece of card stock. (I choose this gold glitter one from my local craft store)
- About four feet of clear jewelry wire or fishing line
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Glue gun & glue sticks
Step by Step Instructions for How to Make Easy DIY Star Garland
Step ONE – Make Your Star Template
Trace 1 big (about 5-6 inches), 1 medium, (3inches), and 1 small (1 inch) star on the back of the card stock.
I made my stars imperfect on purpose to give them a more vintage & homemade look.
Step TWO – Cut Out the Glitter Stars to Make your DIY Star Garland
Cut out the 3 stars and use them as a template to make more stars.
In the end I wound up with 3 big, 4 medium and 7 small stars so a total of 14 stars for my DIY star garland.
If you wanted to make your DIY star garland bigger you could certainly add another sheet of card stock!
Step THREE – Lay out the Stars to Create your DIY Star Garland
Lay out the stars in the order you want them to go.
I chose to give mine an upper curve rather than keep them in a straight line.
Step FOUR – Glue Your Glitter Stars in Place
Using the low setting on your glue gun, glue the stars together end to end.
Step FIVE – Add Fishing Line or Clear Wire to Hang your DIY Star Garland
Glue on two feet of clear wire on either side.
You could have the wire shorter depending on how many stars you use. I kept mine long because I wanted to have the freedom to move it to a different location if I choose too.
See super simple & it took me under an hour to make!!!!

DIY Star Garland Tips
I had all of these items at home already so this craft was free for me to make. I use card stock a lot in my decorating so I usually stock up on it when it goes on sale at AC Moore or Michael’s. You can chose you own favorite pattern.
I chose the gold glitter paper because I wanted to be able to use the garland again at Christmas and New Years. I see more card stock garland on my mantels in the future:)…(leaves in the fall, flowers in the spring, hearts or snowflakes in the winter, letter signs). The possibilities are endless:)
I hope this inspires you to create a card stock garland & DIY star garland for your home.
