Taking Out our Former Cast Iron Bathtub (BEFORE)
Our farmhouse master bathroom originally had an ugly Brown cast iron garden tub surrounded by heavy terra cotta tile.
Now… those of you that are considering cast iron bathtubs be forewarned… they are HEAVY!
You can see how difficult it was to get our cast iron bathtub in our farmhouse (see it HERE) for the boys bathroom just a few years ago!

In order to get this heavy tub OUT, Jason broke it up with a small sledgehammer & we threw it away piece by piece.
Kohler Underscore 72″ Soaking Tub with Center Drain
We ordered the Kohler Underscore Bathtub with a center drain from Build.com. (find it HERE)
Or You can find it on Amazon below…
KOHLER K-1834-0 Underscore Rectangle Bathtub, WhiteSIZE – It is approximately 72″ Long by 36″ wide by 23″ high & we bought it in white.
Moving our Kohler Underscore Bathtub Into the Master Bathroom
Getting our new Kohler Underscore Bathtub in our farmhouse was much simpler than getting the old brown bathtub out & did not require any extra equipment except 3 of my favorite guys. 🙂
They easily carried our new Kohler Underscore Bathtub up our farmhouse stairs.

After taking our new HUGE bathtub out of the very large card board box they carried it up the stairs & into the bathroom in just a few minutes with barely breaking a sweat!

Adding our Kohler Underscore Bathtub to the 3 Wall Alcove we Created
We placed our new acrylic soaking tub in a place of honor behind our shower wall & near the bathroom window.
Jason placed the Kohler underscore bathtub on the 2 by 4 bathtub surround he created for it.
We added shiplap to the walls around it.
DIY Marble Ledge & Wainscoting for the Undermount Bathtub

Jason added 4 Carrara Marble White 6 X 74 inch Marble Curb from Floor & Decor (find them HERE)

He cut & added 1/4″ MDF with our finish nailer & I painted the MDF white to hide the underside of our new deep bathtub & create a finished look for our farmhouse master bathroom.
Wall Mounted Chrome Faucet for our Kohler Undermount Bathtub
We added a Chrome wall mounted Faucet to the Shiplap Wall.

We chose to add the chrome faucet to our side wall so we could lean our back on the angled sides of the Kohler underscore bathtub without the faucet getting in the way.

Review of Kohler Underscore Bathtub
Our new gorgeous Kohler Underscore Bathtub is absolutely gorgeous.

We love that it was easy to bring into the master bathroom & is large enough for both of us to sit in at the same time.
It is even big enough for Moose to get a bath! 🙂
The one thing that surprised me about our new Kohler Underscore Bathtub is how DEEP it is.
When Jason & I were considering bathtubs we were careful about ordering the correct width & length.
We also wanted a soaking bathtub with a center drain so we were never sitting on the drain.
However, we never really thought much about the depth of the bathtub.
As we are getting older, it is not the easiest to get in & out of & Jason will be building a step stool to help with that in the future…
Maybe out of Pallet Wood. 🙂

Would we buy the Kohler Underscore Bathtub again???
ABSOLUTELY!
I hope this answers any questions you might have about the Kohler Underscore Bathtub & inspires you with some master bathroom remodel ideas!

Lovely remodel and I appreciate the step by step. I’m interested in getting a kohler underscore tub to use as an under mount tub but have heard that the angle of the tub’s decking is designed for water to flow into tub when used as a drip in tub. This makes it a poor choice for an under mount tub as the decking put on top can not sit flush to the tub deck but rests on the outer most edge which creates space for water to seep into.. What was your experience? Thank you.
Thanks for stopping by to check out our bathroom remodel Jenny! There is a very slight slope to the decking but it wasn’t too much of an issue for us. Once we set the tub in we built out the outer edge of the framing up to the level of the outer edge of the tub deck. The marble decking was wide enough that it sits at least half on this flat wood framing and then, as you said, comes in contact with the outer edge of the tub decking. We used a nice thick bead of quality silicone sealant/adhesive about 1.5 inches into the tub decking to support the inside edge of the marble decking and to seal any water from escaping the tub through that gap. With this method the decking is strong enough to sit on without movement even considering the slight slope. You would only notice the gap when sitting in the tub and it isn’t very significant. Also, I will say that this is an extremely deep tub…if you are filling in full enough to even be close to this edge you might be drowning :).
