After what has seemed like forever, we have finally decided to tackle our farmhouse kitchen! Our kitchen has some really great bones but our main goal in this renovation is to make the space feel bigger and brighter while hopefully gaining a little more storage and counter space. Our hope to remake this farmhouse kitchen for less than $10,000 while doing the work ourselves and without destroying the integrity of what is already here.
Farmhouse Kitchen Renovation- The Plan

Ha, I can’t tell you guys how many times I have started writing this post! I truly didn’t know where to begin. But now that I have shared our “plan” we have to start this kitchen renovation…am I right? 🙂
I have spent many hours day dreaming of what our “perfect” kitchen would be. Just check out my Kitchen Board on Pinterest,
A big open kitchen with white cabinets, white countertops and beautiful hardwood floors.
Big family dinners prepared in a giant European oven, served out on a giant island.
Sugar cookies and pie crusts rolled out on beautiful marble counters with vintage rolling pins.
Fresh produce, herbs and flowers washed in a giant farmhouse sink.
The perfect coffee station, lots of storage and a comfy spot to eat! Whew… is that asking too much? 🙂
Well… enter back into reality with things like budgets and kids and time and our plan evolved over the years.
The first thing we plan to do is replace the oven. It has been broken since the summer and Jason promised me that I would have a working one before we have 22 people for Thanksgiving :). Unfortunately it will not be the giant European one I had my heart set on but…. we won’t have to sell my car to afford it so that’s a good thing, I guess ;).
I am actually pretty excited to have a working oven again and it is supposed to come later today so I am crossing my fingers that I will like it. We also plan on adding a pot filler above the oven too, Yay!
We also want to add a vent hood above the oven. Although, before we add the vent hood we plan on taking down ALL the upper cabinets.
Although our kitchen might look bright with edited photos and a lighting kit but in reality it’s DARK. Taking down the upper cabinets should help make the room feel brighter and bigger (we hope).
Wood ceilings, wood beams, wood cabinets and wood floors is a lot of wood for one room! We plan on keeping the base cabinets but adding white bead board to the ceiling to brighten it up. Although, my first instinct was to paint the cabinets white we have decided to keep them their natural wood. We will be adding some new hardware to the cabinets though.
We also plan to change out the sink and the dark green countertops to a farmhouse sink and Carrera marble (or Carrera marble look alike) to brighten up the space. I will also be adding white subway tile to the backsplash (similar to what I did in our laundry room) to make the kitchen look even prettier!
Believe it or not the beams and wood ceiling in our kitchen our faux so we plan on replacing the wood with painted white bead board and we plan on keeping the beams but either changing up the wood or lightening it.
Since the upper cabinets are coming down we plan on adding a built in cupboard (where the kids easel is below) to help with storage. We found a vintage one on Etsy that I think will look so pretty in our kitchen and we hope we can move the coffee station there.
Last but certainly not least we want to move the fridge over to the pantry wall and add a doorway into our living room from the kitchen.
We also plan on enlarging the doorway between the dining room and kitchen to leave space for an island. I am sure that there is a few things I am forgetting (like painting the walls) but just thinking about this renovation makes me want to take a nap :).
Here’s one last breakdown of our Kitchen Renovation Plans…
