One Room Challenge – Demo, Paint, Bead Board Ceiling & Wide Pine Floors – Week 2

Ryan's Room - One Room Challenge - Week 2 - Demo, Bead board Ceiling, Wide Pine floors and Paint

Hi guys!  It’s week 2 of the One Room Challenge and I am back today to share the progress we made in Ryan’s built in bedroom.  If you missed the plan we have for his room you catch that post here.  This week I am sharing our progress adding bead board ceilings, wide pine floors and navy paint.

The room one challenge is hosted by Linda from Calling It Home and over the course of 5 weeks designers and guest participants, that’s me 🙂 share their progress of renovating and designing one room from top to bottom.  Doesn’t that sound exciting?  It has actually been really fun as a bunch of my blogging friends and I share what we have been up to and cheer each other on!  Here is one more before pic.

Ryan's Room - One Room Challenge - Week 2 - Demo, Bead board Ceiling, Wide Pine floors and Paint

The first thing we did was demo!!!  We are adding a built in bed in the same spot as the former closet so we needed to figure out we had to figure out the footprint of that first so we knew where the bead board ceiling was going.   Once we took out the closet we started adding the strips to where the bead board ceiling was going next.

Next we added the tongue and groove bead board with a little crown molding around the perimeter of the ceiling followed by 3 coats of white paint.  To learn details about adding a bead board ceiling you can read about it here.

We also added a new ceiling fan to replace the old one and a brass boob light.  Next we painted the walls Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy.  We loved the color so much in Ben’s room that we decided to repeat it in Ryan’s room.  The dark flat paint does a fantastic job covering any imperfections on the old plaster walls.  Next up we started to lay some wide pine tongue and groove floors.

We added the same wide pine floors as we added to the rest of the 2nd floor.  It is so great to finally have all our floors match :).   Woo Hoo! To read more about how we added our wide pine floors you can check that post out here.

Once the floors were in, stained and poly urethaned I cut the baseboard trim to nail in.  We decided to replace the old baseboard that was here because it was really small and we wanted to have it match the rest of the house.

I just love the crisp white woodwork against the navy walls and pine floors! Jason thought it was funny to take pics of me this time since I am always taking pics of him :).

  1. Holy cow, you made a TON of progress already! You are superwoman! Love white beadboard with the navy walls! We are using navy in my son’s room for the ORC, too! 🙂

  2. Tara I adore the direction that your room is headed towards! You did SO much better than I did in my room this week.

  4. Wow, what a challenge! I must admit I’ve never done a major job like this, I would love to, but we’ve always lived in rentals and have moved so many times due to work…..I hope that I get to do something like this eventually though! It must be sooo much fun! I love the ceilings and the floors are super! Thanks so much for sharing at Sweet Inspiration #2 Tara! Have a nice weekend!

  5. Wow, Tara, you take a project and really run with it! Can’t believe all you accomplished in one week. And how cute are you manning the saw? I must confess, those things scare me, but fortunately by daughter is in Theatre Tech class and loves power tools. Looking forward to seeing the room progress. Take care, Cynthia

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by Cynthia! I used to be afraid of the power tools too but I soon realized that we could move a lot quicker with our renovations after I started using them :). How fun that your daughter helps out!!!
