Growing up my mom always encouraged my sisters and I to make something at Christmas to give to grandparents or friends.
I still find there is something really meaningful about taking the time to create a craft for someone else or to just decorate my house with.
Making DIY Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments was by no means my idea originally but it’s a great craft to start with and you can make it as easy or challenging as you want!!!
All you need is some embroidery hoops (around a $1 each at your local craft store), scrap fabric (I raided my thrift store donation bags), and some embroidery thread.
Supplies Needed for DIY Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments
- embroidery hoops (various sizes)
- scrap fabric (being of Scottish heritage, I personalized mine with our family’s clan color)
- embroidery thread
- String to hang
I used tartan (LOVE tartan), velvet, and wool fabric for my ornaments.
The plaid tartan and velvet were from a hand-me down Christmas dress that Audrey would never have worn and the wool from a sweater that no longer fits Jason.
I made the velvet and tartan ones years ago but I made the green Christmas tree this year.
These are crazy easy to make I wasn’t even sure I needed to add any instruction but I did!
Step by Step Instructions for How to Make DIY Embroidery Hoop Ornaments
Step ONE – Place your Fabric in the Embroidery Hoop
Place your fabric inside of the hoop and cut around the back of the hoop. Pretty self explanatory. 🙂
That’s all I did for my tartan one above.
Step TWO – Creating a Christmas Tree with Embroidery Thread
Using embroidery thread I stitched around the tree I cut out.
Later I added a trunk and and Christmas star to the top.
I embroidered the “L” to my black velvet ornament.
I love the contrast of the white thread against the black velvet.
Step THREE – Hang your DIY Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornament
I hung our embroidery hoop Christmas ornaments with raffia.
I hung our ornaments inside on our old door turned coat rack till we get our Christmas tree.
I think they look prettier there than the coats do!
Personalized DIY Embroidery Hoop Ornaments
Update – I created more DIY Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments. I hung one DIY embroidery hoop Christmas ornament from our DIY Pallet Wreath.
I personalized them using the fabric from my childhood Scottish kilt with our family’s clan color and hung them on our Christmas tree.
I hope this inspires you & answers all your questions for how to make DIY embroidery hoop Christmas ornaments at your home!
