Curb Appeal Hop – The Plan

Curb appeal hop - the plan

Hi guys!  I am so excited to finally start some projects outside!!!  Over the next few weeks I will be sharing different decorating, gardening and diy projects to add more curb appeal to our old farmhouse but today I am starting with the plan, que music playing :).   Although we have done a few things so far to the curb appeal…. adding the grids back to the windows ( IMO- windows should always have grids), we dug out some huge ornamental grasses, we built 2 Cedar flower planters, added a window and made over an entryway bench to the front I still have big plans for our home.  I would still love to see our farmhouse painted white with a big porch with comfy seating, pretty lighting, a more prominent front door, flowers everywhere and a little more shade. Here’s a rough sketch of my plan…as you can see I am not an artist :).

Curb appeal hop - the plan

While I know it will take a few years to get to where we want to be, you have to start somewhere!  Oh and I almost forgot this curb appeal hop with Deb from Seeking Lavendar Lane and I and a few more of my blogging friends so if my ideas don’t appeal to you scroll down and check out what my friends have planned.

Here is the front as it is right now.  As you can see I have a lot of work to do.  The first thing we want to do is change up the landscaping a little bit.  I want to remove the bushes in the front garden because they are partially blocking the front door from the driveway.  I also want to add a tree to break up the length of our farmhouse and provide some much needed shade to the walkway and the driveway.  As you can see we already dug the hole!!!

Next we want to drawl the eye more to the front door by adding a new new porch light and some more flowers, pretty farmhouse decor and a new front mat.

There is a bird’s nest above the light so we are going to wait till the fuzzy little guys fly away to move them and add in the new light.

I want to repaint our entryway bench that has some paint peeling on the seat thanks to lots of melting snow and I also would love to find more comfy seating for the front.  Jason and I need a nice spot to relax while the kids play in the driveway and although the bench is great for taking muddy boots off its not super comfy to sit on for more than a few minutes.

Lastly, we really want to extend the porch by adding a pergola (time, money and weather permitting) and I still am trying to talk Jason into adding an old lunch or school bell.

Farmhouse Curb Appeal

  • dig out and move the shrubs that are in bad spots in the front and place in better locations in the yard
  • add a tree, some evergreens and other small perennials to the front
  • hide the ugly short wall in the front
  • add more comfortable seating to the front porch
  • paint the entryway bench
  • change out the front light to one that isn’t as bird friendly and has more of a farmhouse feel
  • add more potted plants, porch decor, a new mat and a school bell
  • time permitting extend the front entrance by adding a pergola

It will be fun to see how much we can accomplish over the next few weeks.  Yay!  I can’t wait to see the end result!!!  What do you think of the plan?  Any suggestions?  Don’t forget to scroll down to see what my friends have planned!

  1. Tara, I love the stone wall, is that the original stone from the barn. That so sweet about the bird nest, hopefully they wont be there to long! I can’t wait to see week by week progress.

    1. Hi Maria! We still aren’t sure where all this stone came from, I even found a hidden brick walkway under some plants when I was digging out our front garden bed :). The birds are cute but the mom and dad fly away every time someone comes or leaves the door so the cuteness factor is definitely getting old!

  2. ahh Tara I love the sketch, I do the same thing lol! I just love your home, and you know I adore that bench. Can’t wait to see the changes.

    1. Thanks Deb! I am so excited to be apart of this curb appeal hop. It’s feels so great to be outside after spending all winter on indoor projects!!!

  3. I’m so excited to see this one come together. Your house is just amazing. I love the stone retaining walls, the porch etc. We added a pergola a couple of years ago in the backyard and we love the shade and texture it adds. It would be a perfect addition to your home. The school bell is a must!! Good luck!

  4. Haha! That sketch is awesome, my husband is a sketcher, too! I can’t wait to see what you do. I am excited about a new light and I plan to spruce up our bench, which really needs it. I love the reds and your bench is a great antique piece. I can’t wait to see the landscaping you do!
