I have been wanting to dye eggs naturally for years.  

I have a few recipes pinned and this year two days before Easter I finally took the organic plunge!  

I went to the supermarket picked up a bunch of obscure vegetables and brown eggs & hoping no one noticed the 3 boxes of soda under the cart, ha!

Ingredients Needed to Dye Eggs Naturally

  • 2 Dozen Brown Eggs
  • Red Beets
  • Yellow Onions
  • Vinegar
  • Blueberries
  • Parsley
  • Turmeric

Instructions for How to Dye Eggs Naturally

Hard Boil the Eggs

I hard boiled 2 dozen brown eggs by putting them in a pot of cold water, letting them boil & then turning off the heat for them to sit for 20-30 minutes.  

Beautiful cage free brown eggs.

Choosing brown eggs was my first & biggest mistake!

How to Dye Eggs Naturally the Color Orange

I boiled yellow onion skins with some water & chopped up the beets & cooked them with some vinegar to color them orange.

How to Dye Eggs Naturally Red or Pink

I cut up red beets and boiled them in water for some pink eggs.

Step FOUR – How to Dye Eggs Naturally the Color Blue

I smashed a cup of fresh blueberries and boiled them to make blue.

How to Dye Eggs Naturally the Color Green

I cut up half a bunch of fresh parsley, 1 tablespoon of turmeric, 1/3 cup of blueberries to make green because we needed green.

And… I brought everyone into the kitchen to dye some AMAZING eggs!

I had set the table nicely and poured the natural egg dye into different colored cups.

We were all ready…

Moose was definitely ready!!!

Can you Dye Brown Eggs Naturally???

Well, when we were all done… Jason announced that we had successfully dyed our eggs

White eggs may have dyed the eggs a little better but I didn’t want to change it being unsuccessful AGAIN.

How to Dye Eggs (not naturally) with Ingredients You Already have at Home

So I got out the 6 white eggs we had in the fridge and hard boiled them.

I found great recipe for dying eggs with food coloring with ingredients I already had at home.

Ingredients Needed to Dye Eggs with Food Coloring

  • 20 drops food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Can I Dye Brown Eggs with Food Coloring???

And guess what the food coloring worked just as well with the brown eggs as well as with the white!  

I actually think the brown eggs look more natural!

  1. I really like the look of the dyed brown eggs. I stood in the grocery store contemplating doing the same thing but talked myself out of it thinking that brown eggs would not accept the dye right. Oh well ~ now I know for next year. I just love your blog!
