Beautiful Four Poster Bed Makeover with Spray Paint

Our Girl's Room - Part II - Four Poster Bed Red

We gave our queen wood four poster bed a makeover with spray paint. It was an incredibly cheap & easy & DIY project that only took a few hours & only cost us $20 to redo. It is beautiful & works perfectly in our daughter’s bedroom/ guest room.

Four Poster Bed Redo & Makeover-We transformed out our old outdated 4 poster bed into a pretty blue bed perfect for a girl's room with just a few cans of spray paint! #spraypaint #furnitureredo #farmhousebedroom #paintedfurniture #thriftedhomedecor https://lehmanlane.net

I bought this four poster bed on Ebay (from Restoration Hardware) about 12 years ago for our master bedroom in our Town Traditional because we had these gorgeous 10 foot ceilings.  I LOVE this bed but Jason…not so much.

Soon after we moved into our second home we got a different bedroom set but I was determined to keep the this four poster bed to decorate our daughter’s bedroom with.

We have been wanting to add a queen bed to our little girl’s room for guests & after getting a new mattress thanks to a sweet gift card we decided it was time to give this four poster bed a makeover!

I think her four poster bed looks fabulous & has been the perfect spring board for the farmhouse decorating ideas in this room.

Supplies Needed for a Four Poster Bed Makeover

  • Wood Four Poster Bed
  • Old Sheet or Drop Cloth
  • Spray paint (4 cans)
  • Sand Paper or Orbital Sander
  • Saw if you need to cut down your four poster bed

Lowering the Four Poster Bed to the Correct Height for Sloped Attic Ceilings

The four poster bed was really tall… (Our family is not breaking any Genius book of world records for height any time soon…so Jason cut off 4  inches of the feet to make the bed a little lower!

We also did not want the four poster bed to be too tall for our sloped attic ceilings in our daughter’s bedroom.

How many Cans of Spray Paint do you need for a Four Poster Bed

We spray painted it Valspar’s secluded garden with paint and primer mixed in.  We needed 5 cans at $4 each.

Why we use Spray Paint instead of Cans of Paint

I really like spray painting furniture.  It looks more professional in my opinion with no paint brush marks and it is crazy EASY!!!

Don’t forget to light sand any piece of furniture you are painting. Sanding the wood lightly will help the paint stick better.

I love the color too, it’s like a cool green blue.

Unfortunately, I must have accidentally deleted the before pictures of the bed because I can’t find them anywhere… sorry guys!

We gave her our floral duvet cover from Anthropologie we had bought for our stone cottage & an old white bedspread I bought at the thrift shop I used to work for.  The other quilt & pillow cover are from Pottery Barn Kids.

I brought in a wide legged small card table from our garage for her dollhouse.

It’s the perfect height and it swivels so she can turn it without our help. Jason had refinished this table years ago as an end table but we hadn’t found a spot for it until now.

Both Jason and I love the look of the bed even more now and Audrey calls it her “Frozen” bed.

Anybody wonder why? ðŸ™‚

I also painted the trim in the room white.

Two coats, two days and it probably needs another (why can’t we ever buy a house with white trim)!

We still have a few more DIY projects & decorating ideas planned like a built in seat & bookcase, new floor & some other minor remodeling and decorating tweaks but I am excited about how it’s coming along & I love how the bed turned out!!!

The best part is that even Jason likes it now. 🙂

  5. I love her room. So darling but not so babyish that she can’t grow with it. What color are her walls? Pinks can be so hard sometimes, and I love how soft it is. Thanks! Great job!

  6. Hi there,

I’m thinking of buying this exact bed off of Craigslist and painting it. Have you have any trouble with the pine knots bleeding through since you painted it? Thanks for any advice!

    1. Hi Julie! Thanks so much for stopping by to check our four poster bed redo. I had not even thought about knots until I saw your comment:). After checking out the bed Just now I did see one quarter size knot bleeding through a little. I think because the color we chose is pretty dark I may never have noticed it otherwise. The bed is fantastic and we love it. It’s super sturdy and has lasted lots of kids and dogs jumping up and down on it:). Hope this helps your decision, take care, Tara

      1. Thanks so much for your reply! Saw the bed today and it IS beautiful! Sadly, the mattress and box spring I have for it are WAY too tall . Even if I rigged it for just a mattress only, it would still be too high. Such a bummer! Thanks for your help though!

  7. I have obsessed over this bed for 2 or 3 years. I have looked at every estate sale, garage sale and fb sale sites. And it finally happened. I found the bed. Drove an hour to pick it up.
Well the wait was worth it. I painted mine black. I painted our bedroom and it looks absolutely amazing. ( Even my husband loves it)
Thanks for sharing the pictures of your daughters bed. I couldn’t be happier.

  8. So…. I obsessed over this bed when it was for sale in the 90s. My friend’s mom was a manager at Restoration Hardware, and she had one. They were downsizing their home about 12 years ago, and she told my friend (her daughter) that she was going to sell it, and my friend told her she HAD to ask me first because she remembered how much I wanted one. I got it! It’s now my guest bed. I LOVE how you cut it down because it’s even too high for me! I have a step stool under it! I adore this color and love the look of the room. Excellent job! I haven’t painted mine, buuuuuuut you make me rethink it!
