Ryan’s Built in Boys Blue Bedroom Before & the Plan for Renovation

Ryan’s room presented quite a challenge for us to figure out how to make it feel more open.

His room had 3 doorways, one window and a large double door closet which left little room to place furniture.

ORC Week 1 - Boys built in bedroom before

As you can see from below he doesn’t have a normal looking doorway and he’s missing a door.

ORC Week 1 - Boys built in bedroom before

The room is also only 8 feet wide so whatever furniture we did have left the room feeling very cramped.

Before starting this boy’s built in bedroom we did close off one of the doorways into Ryan’s room to make room for a built in desk in Bennett’s room.

We also added a pallet sliding barn door to the doorway between Ryan’s and Tucker’s room when we turned our former master closet into our youngest bedroom ( you can see that transformation here).

DIY Bead Board Ceiling in our Built in Boys Blue Bedroom

The first thing we did was demo this boys bedroom!

We are adding a built in bed in the same spot as the former closet so we had to figure out the footprint of that first so we knew where the DIY bead board ceiling was going.

Once we took out the closet we started adding the strips to where the bead board ceiling was going next.

Next we added the tongue and groove bead board with a little crown molding around the perimeter of the ceiling followed by 3 coats of white paint.

See how to DIY a bead board ceiling here.

We also added a new ceiling fan to replace the old one.

DIY Painting this Blue Bedroom Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy

We added Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy to Ryan’s Walls.

We loved the color of Ben’s blue bedroom so much that we decided to repeat it in Ryan’s room.

Ryan's Room - One Room Challenge - Week 2 - Demo, Bead board Ceiling, Wide Pine floors and Paint

The dark flat paint does a fantastic job covering any imperfections on the old plaster walls.

DIY Wide Pine Floors to our Boys Built in Blue Bedroom

Next up we started to lay some wide pine tongue and groove floors.

Ryan's Room - One Room Challenge - Week 2 - Demo, Bead board Ceiling, Wide Pine floors and Paint

We added the same wide pine floors as we added to the rest of the 2nd floor.

It is so great to finally have all our floors match!

See how to add DIY wide pine floors here.

Once the floors were in, stained & poly urethaned, I cut the baseboard trim to nail in.

We decided to replace the old baseboard that was here because it was really small & we wanted to have it match the rest of the house.

Ryan's Room - One Room Challenge - Week 2 - Demo, Bead board Ceiling, Wide Pine floors and Paint

I just love the crisp white woodwork against the navy walls & pine floors!

DIY Roman Shade for Privacy in this Dark Blue Boys Bedroom

I made this Pottery Barn inspired roman shade for only $15. (see the DIY HERE)

My kiddo’s books are well worn.

He absolutely loves to read so I know it won’t be long before his shelves are filled with even more books.

Ryan also loves playing lacrosse and we were lucky to  find 2 “vintage” lacrosse sticks at our local thrift store.

The lax sticks wood goes well with the pallet barn door Jason made to divide his room from his younger brothers

I think just about anything looks great hung on his navy walls with white trim, even store bought maps.

For only $15 for 2 at our local Costco.

We used the other one in his brother’s room.
