This past weekend I visited The New York Botanical Garden with some girlfriends.

I am kinda embarrassed to admit that this was my first trip to the Botanical gardens and to the Bronx… or close to NYC… I only live 2 hours away!

(this allee of tulip poplars above was so beautiful)

Visiting gardens is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite things to do!

Before majoring in dance I actually started out as a horticulture major.

After spending 2 semesters looking at plant cells under a microscope ..I decided I wanted to spend the next 3 years of college dancing.

I never lost my appreciation for gardening & visiting beautiful gardens and although I cherished my time as a dancer I sometimes wish I had finished my horticulture degree.

The gardens of the New York Botanical Garden were AMAZING!

We went to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit.

It was the first time I had ever seen her artwork up close.

I was truly moved by how much emotion went into her paintings and how much she was influenced by nature.

The NY Botanical Gardens displays a famous artist’s work and then recreates their garden in their conservatory.

I love thinking about how much gardens influence artists & how much my garden influences how I live my life especially my decorating.

Kahlo’s garden’s were so colorful just like her artwork.

Can you believe this stunning ladies slipper orchid?

It was behind glass so I don’t think there is much hope for me to have one at home!

There was this gorgeous giant pond outside with water lilies and Koi fish.  Next DIY project?

This garden is huge (250 acres) so although we checked out a lot of it we didn’t get to see all of it.

There were so many things I saw at the New York Botanical Garden that inspired me to recreate in the gardens of our farmhouse.

Like these formal parterres above (some with herbs and hydrangeas).

The smell was amazing.

I know want to add a small herb potager at our farmhouse.

Or this cute little kids seating area made of stumps.

We certainly have a lot of them here.. stumps and kids, ha!

How gorgeous is this 250 year old tree stump…would that not make an amazing dining table?

It was a beautifully perfect day to enjoy the New York Botanical Garden with friends.

And I definitely want to go back to see the next artist’s garden… whoever that will be!

If you live anywhere near the Bronx I would totally recommend visiting the Botanical garden, it was so much fun!

  1. Glad to see you got in some wonderful sights. The conservatory is truly amazing. It was completed a few years after I moved away and I did not have the chance to see it till 4 years ago when I returned. Was I amazed!! Also there is a kids garden, and a forest.. and across the street is the Bronx Zoo if you are ever in the area with the kids. (Do I sound like a RP for the Bronx..lol). So glad to see that you enjoyed it so much. I took my children there when they were young and now again as teens and young adults. They LOVE it!

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by Mary to read my post about the New York Botanical Gardens! I can see you love visiting there too:). We rode the tram through the forest and got to see some of the kids garden. It is really is a special place. I hope you had a great weekend and take care, Tara

  2. It looks like you had a lovely day trip. That lady slipper orchid was impressive. I saw a lady slipper once when I was out on a hike. It was beautiful, but so fragile.
