Supplies & Tools Needed to Make Velvet Pumpkins

  • Velvet Fabric – (any kind you like) large enough to trace a plate size circle.  I found some beautiful velvet fabric on Amazon, 100% SILK VELVET SOLID FABRIC 45″W CLOTHING,DRAPERY,DRESSES 30 COLOR BY THE YARD (CORAL/ORANGE)
  • Bag of beans – I used blacked eyed peas because they were on sale but any beans would work
  • Thread that matches the pumpkins ( I used embroidery thread because its thick and strong but you can double up any thread)
  • Real Pumpkin Stem ( I cut the stems off of the tops of my kids pumpkins…shh don’t tell them yet they haven’t figured it out yet:)
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Plate (the bigger the plate… the bigger the pumpkin)
  • Glue gun & glue sticks (I used about a 1/3 of a stick for every pumpkin)

Ideas for Where to Find Cheap Fabric for Beautiful Velvet Pumpkins

Inexpensive Fabric Online – I ordered a couple 1/2 yards of velvet in lots of colors from Fabric.com.  I order both stretch velvet & antique velvet.  Nothing was more than $5 a 1/2 yard.  Each 1/2 yard makes about 10 pumpkins 3″-4″ pumpkins.

Thrift Stores – hit up some thrift stores for some cheap old velvet Christmas dresses.  What a great way to recycle a dress no one would wear except to one of those ugly outfit Christmas parties.

Cost to Make Gorgeous Velvet Pumpkins

Doing simple math I figure it cost me about $1.50 to make each pumpkin…(About 50 cents worth of fabric and $1 worth of beans).  I already had the thread & glue sticks.  I was able to make 1 pumpkin a quarter while watching the Eagles game Sunday night… only 15 minutes ladies.

Small Velvet Pumpkins as Place Cards & Gifts

Velvet pumpkins make a great gift for your guests to take home on thanksgiving or a fancy holiday fall dinner.

They also look great on a fall holiday tablescape.

I love how the green velvet pumpkin looks next to the red leaf place card.

I used a chalk marker to write the name.

  1. Tara, these are adorable, and so much better than paying $27 per pumpkin! That’s pure craziness. I love how you made them while watching a football game. Ahh, it makes me realize that fall is right around the corner. 🙂

    1. Thanks Jenny! They are so easy to make and I am excited to make some more pumpkins now that football pre-season has started:). I planted a pumpkin plant this year so I would have more pumpkin stems.

  2. What a lovely idea, they look great. As I see you made these last year I am now wondering how the stems lasted? Will you need to replace them for this year or did they survive?

    1. Hi Julie! I updated the post about my velvet pumpkins and added a picture for you to see. The stems are still in great shape and look the same as they did last year:). Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! I hope you have a nice week. Take care, Tara
