About 6 months ago I saw this bookcase out of the corner of my eye in someone’s front yard. I then drove around the block and and thought surely no one would be throwing this out. I passed the house with the bookcase once again and parked this time. Tucker and I got out stood guard while I called Jason to see if he could meet us with the truck meanwhile truck after truck after truck drove bye slowly eyeing what was now my bookcase;). Fortunately about 20 minutes later Jason came with the truck and helped me load the bookcase. We drove it home and it sat in our garage for the next 6 months until I convinced Jason I had the perfect spot for it. And I did, In the living room we just had to paint the bookcase first!
Since we had moved into our house I had been missing our built in bookcases from the Suburban Split that Jason had built. We hadn’t brought any bookcases with us and I had been checking Craigslist often but nothing seemed quite right. Until now:) our books were all over the house some were in boxes, in closets, some books were in bags in our bedroom, some in the coffee table and some filling our corner hutch but now they are all in one spot! Yay! It’s awesome! And the best part was it was Free!!!
We painted the bookcase white to match the rest of the trim in the living room. It only took three coats of paint and it probably needs a fourth but I am done…we still have at least half of the rest of the house to paint.
To style the bookcase I put books in the same color family together. Jason kids that it is harder to find the books this way but it looks so much better!
It was important to me to add personal touches like photos, baskets and shells to add interest and not make it look to much like a public library bookshelf:-). Having some books lay while others stand vertically adds interest as well. We moved the console and mirror that were on this wall behind the couch.
I finally unpacked all of my book boxes and was able to move most of the books from Jason’s grandmother’s old corner hutch so I can display some of my McCoy pots.
We also packed most of Christmas decorations away except for a few wintery things on the mantel. I hung a book page wreath over the fireplace.
I kept a snowman cloche ornament on the coffee table with some pine cones and a terrarium.
A few of you have asked how we could get all this done so quick. Well…we drove to Florida for Christmas and the whole time there and back the bookcase was calling my name. Tucker’s room (final reveal coming soon) was calling Jason’s or maybe that was the final season of prison break…either way we were on a roll:-).
This is living room has come a long way from where it was when moved in (see here)and it is still my favorite room in the house!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Don’t forget to pin our New/ Old Bookcase!!!
