Our teenage son Bennett’s room is FINALLY remodeled & decorated & I couldn’t be happier with how this navy boys bedroom turned out!.

His Boys Bedroom Before…

Here’s a look at what the room looked like soon after we moved in….

Bennett's Room - part 1 - The Plan
Navy Bedroom Before

Changing His Bedroom Doorway & Adding a Transom Bedroom Door

The first DIY project we did was to change the doorway into his bedroom to give the hallway & bathroom entrance more space and to give him a door.

For some strange reason none of the bedrooms in our old farmhouse had doors on them to begin with, it’s a little weird… actually, very WEIRD!

Changing the Doorway

You can read more about how we re-configured the doorway to his room here. And…below is what his doorway looks like now!

The transom window is my favorite part of changing the doorway in this navy boys bedroom.

It adds so much natural light into the small hallway outside the door.

We still haven’t decided on whether to paint his door red like the rest of the doors downstairs or just paint them white.

I also need to change out the other door knob 🙂 But I love how the white trim around the door & transom really pops with the blue paint navy boys bedroom.

Adding a Tongue and Groove Bead Board Ceiling

Next we added a bead board ceiling to his bedroom.

This helped brighten, add character & add support to the plaster ceiling that had started to deteriorate.

DIY - Bead board Ceiling

We absolutely love the character the ceiling gives his room.  You can read about how to add DIY a bead board ceiling here.

The ceiling fan & light also add a nice contrast to the white of the bead board & the navy boys bedroom walls.

Painting this Navy Boys Bedroom – Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy

Then it came to painting his room & if you were following me on Instagram or FaceBook you would have seen this …. 🙂

Come check out navy boys bedroom reveal. We completed gutted the room and added new ceiling, new floors, paint, built in desk and a new doorway.

Yup, I spilled a brand new can of navy paint all over the floor.

Painting Tips Learned in this Navy Boys Bedroom

#1 – Never attempt to move a ladder with an open can of paint up top. 🙂

Long story short I scooped up the spilled paint with my bare hands and rolled the rest on the floor.

I do love the navy boys bedroom color and how it contrasts with his ceiling.

It’s Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy which I had mixed at my Sherwin Williams store.

#2 – Dark paints do a great job hiding the imperfections on plaster walls.

Adding Wide Pine Flooring

We had planned on refinishing the original floors but they were not in great shape & after a lead test we found that at least one of the many layers of paint was lead 🙁

We added new wide pine floors to his navy boys bedroom like we did in our master bedroom and Tucker’s room

The floors look great in his navy boys bedroom & it will be nice to have all the bedroom floors match once we are done remodeling all the bedrooms.

New DIY Bed for this Navy Boys Bedroom

Bennett also has a new bed for his navy boys bedroom.

Jason & I had agreed that the one we had in here originally was taking up too much floor space & because we had so many house projects to do we would just go buy one.

Come check out navy boys bedroom reveal. We completed gutted the room and added new ceiling, new floors, paint, built in desk and a new doorway.

However, one Saturday when I thought Jason was “organizing” his garage he was actually making a bed for Ben!!!

I was actually pretty mad at him for doing this but I love how it fits in the room.

I added a grey wool blanket from Pendelton to go with his Ikea duvet cover.

Jason used part of Ben’s old bed to make the new one along with some old wood from our garage.

Unfortunately because he made the bed stealthily… & I don’t have any pictures or info on how he made it.

It has a very slim profile so it doesn’t take up much space in the room.

We hung an oar I found in our basement over the bed of his navy boys bedroom as well as a wall lamp we found at the Restoration Hardware outlet for $25.

Jason also refinished the nautical dresser we have in the navy boys bedroom.

We hung a wall map bought at Costco between the two windows of his navy boys bedroom and his curtains are from Target.

DIY Changing a Doorway into a Wall

Lastly we added a built in desk to the one wall in his navy boys bedroom.

There used to be a doorway here if you can believe it.

We decided we wanted more wall space instead of a second entrance.

DIY Desk & Bookcases for this Navy Boys Bedroom

After all, the kid is in middle school & needs a quiet spot to do his homework.

We also made sure that we added a bunch of bookshelves to his desk of this navy boys bedroom because he loves to read.
