We have a really wonky property line & need ALL the help we can get to make our outdoor dining space private while still keeping our dog & kiddos in the yard.

Over the past few weeks Jason & I have been busy putting up more of the fence, regrading the back of our house and building wood lattice all in an effort to keep Moose, our 8 month old Labradoodle contained.

You can see the first part of our Moose containment effort here.

This has been a VERY labor intensive job cutting down trees and overgrown bushes, digging out stumps, & removing the 6-9 inches of dirt that was up to the base of our house.

And people wonder why I never want to work out? 🙂

Cutting down the overgrown trees to make room for the wood square lattice fence

First Jason cut down a bunch of overgrown trees that were planted way too close to the house and our property line.

With the kids help we took down all the other bushes along the back of the house so we could get a straight line to sink the fence posts along the property line.

Step by Step Instructions for How to Build a Square Lattice Fence

Size of our DIY Square Lattice Fence Panels

The Square Lattice Fence Panel Horizontal Boards are 1 3/4 inches wide by 7 feet long spaced every 3 inches.

The Square Lattice Fence Panel Vertical Boards are 1 inch wide by 6 feet long spaced every 4 inches.

Step ONE – Preparing the Ground for the Wood Square Lattice Fence

You can see just how rocky our soil is!

It took many MANY days to get the dirt level down & dig out the stumps (this was Jason’s job…he would to do a couple each weekend until we were all done)

Step TWO – Digging the Post Holes for the Wood Square Lattice Fence

Then we dug holes for the posts with our post hole digger all along the house and cemented them in.

Planting along the Square Lattice Fence Line

I planted a dogwood tree from Lowes I got for 75% off ($12.50) along with a hydrangea we moved from behind the house.  (You can see my tips for saving money on trees and plants here)

Step THREE – Cutting the Pressure Treated Boards to Size to Create the Square Lattice Fence Panels

Jason made the wood square lattice fence panels with pressure treated boards from Lowes.

He zipped them down with his table saw.

Step FOUR – Attaching the 2 by 4’s to the Fence Posts

He screwed the 2 x 4’s to the post and pin nailed the square lattice fence panels together.

As you can see from some of the pictures we are not done yet but we are really thankful to have some privacy and a little shade back.

The 2 square lattice fence panels do give us privacy while looking beautiful at the same time.

We moved the two chaise lounges from our other deck on the other side of the house.

We are definitely using them a lot more on this side of the house since it’s right off the kitchen & this backyard space is a lot more usable now.

It’s the perfect spot to read a book, enjoy an alfresco family dinner or have some mojitos after a long day of digging in your backyard!

It has really grown to take up almost the entire wood square lattice fence & has beautiful white flowers that bloom mid summer.

I am absolutely thrilled with how this vine has grown along our fence that I planted a second climbing hydrangea in front of the lattice fence panel.

The hydrangea bushes, Iris & Hosta look beautiful in front of our wood square lattice fence panels.

    1. Hi Angie, Thanks so much for stopping by and for checking out our new lattice fence! Thanks for the invite to your site too:). Take care, Tara

  1. We just built a trellis on one side of our yard, taking a break (until next year?) to build another one so our yard would be a bit more private.
    I love your square trellis!
As far as vines, I’m thinking an Eden rose in the middle for ours, surrounded by clematis on each side. Not sure bout the clematis color yet. I think Fall would be the best time to plant but I am a novice here, not sure.

    1. Just to add that on the other side, which will be a bit more shady, I am planning a climbing hydrangea on the trellis (yet to be built).

    2. Hi Valerie, Thank you so much for checking out our square lattice fence! I love the idea of combining roses and clematis! I googled Eden rose and they look gorgeous! We have a climbing hydrangea we planted in the front of our house. It hasn’t really taken off yet but I heard they take awhile:). Best of luck with your trellis! Your yard sounds so pretty with all the plants you are planning! Take care, Tara

  2. Oh ho w I love this privacy screen! We want to do something very similar to this, but now maybe this right next to our car port. The neighbors house is just a bit too close for comfort and this would be a beautiful solution! Pinning!

    1. Hi Joanna, A privacy screen next to your car port sounds nice! We definitely understand about too close for comfort, our backyard is only 5 foot wide! My neighbor is the perfect height when mowing his grass to see into our first floor:). Thanks so much for stopping by and for your sweet comments about our privacy fence!

  3. Your yard and fencing is really looking good! Y’all work so hard, I totaly get what you mean about working out!
And thanks for the drink recipe!
    Karen

  4. I love the finished projects here! It’s perfect. Just a couple of questions.
Where are those horizontal 2×4’s in the finished picture? Why so many? And why “pin” them in only to remove them?

    1. Thanks so much for your sweet comments about our DIY Square Lattice Fence Meg! I hope I understand your question… The square frame of the lattice fence is made using 2 by 4’s. We never removed any boards after pin nailing them in.

    1. For the square lattice fence we spaced the vertical strips of wood 3 inches apart & the horizontal strips of wood are 4 inches apart.

        1. Hope this answers your question Adam, the horizontal boards are 1 3/4 inches wide by 7 feet & the vertical boards are 1 inch wide by 6 feet tall of each square lattice fence panel section.

          1. Awesome! Thank you! Are they 1 ³/⁴ ” x 1 ³/⁴” x 7′ and 1″x1″x6′ respectively, or are they not square?
