We wanted to personalize our son’s room hanging his name in a unique way so we made a pallet sign to help make his letters pop.

We were inspired to make a pallet wood sign diy after creating a similar letter sign using old wood from our house for our youngest’s room.

Supplies & Tools Needed for a DIY Pallet Sign for a Name

Size of the Pallet Name Sign is 3 Feet Long by 14″ Tall by 1/2″ Deep

  • Pallet Wood (you can read how to take apart your pallet here)
  • A Saw to Cut the pallet wood boards to the length you Need
  • Wood Letters to Spell out whatever you want on your sign.
  • A Glue gun & glue
  • A Finish Pin Nailer or Hammer & short nails
  • An Orbital sander or Sand paper to sand the pallet wood
  • A metal picture hanger to hang your pallet sign

Step by Step Instructions for How to Make a Wooden DIY Pallet Sign

Step ONE – Take Apart your Pallet Wood.

The first thing we did was take apart our pallet (sharing 6 easy steps for how to take apart a pallet here)

Once you are done this step you should have a pile of usable boards and a pile of scrap.

Step TWO – Cut the Pallet Boards to Size

For our sign we cut 4 boards to 3 feet long & sanded them down very lightly.

We sanded lightly to keep the rustic look to the boards but smooth them out a little bit so Ryan won’t get splinters if he runs his hand across it.

Step THREE – Secure the Pallet Boards Together

We cut 3 pieces of thin scrap wood & fastened them to the back of the pallet boards using a finish pin nailer.

Step FOUR – Glue the Letters on for Your Name

Unfortunately we didn’t have a “Y” for Ryan’s name so we had to improvise.

We cut a “Y” using the pallet wood that had been painted red.

I love the contrast of red it gives to the name on his pallet sign.

Place the letters where you want them on the sign, mark 2 of the corners with a pencil, and glue them on.

We simply used a hot glue gun.

Step FIVE – How to Hang the Pallet Sign

We hung the Pallet letter sign in our son’s room after checking the level by screwing it to the wall.

The contrast of the rustic wood with the Hale Navy paint, white & red letters is beautiful.
