The day has finally come…We’ve completed Tucker’s boys bedroom remodel!

Our baby no longer has a closet for a room…he has a real honest to goodness bedroom!

How to Turn a CLoset into a Bedroom – Bedroom Remodel / Renovation Before (a Former Closet)

When we moved in our house we knew we needed another bedroom but we weren’t sure if remodeling the master closet was the way to achieve that.

We wanted the three boys to be together and our closet shared walls with both older boys bedrooms so the location was perfect!

om Closet to Kids Bedroom

It’s hard to believe this bedroom used to be a master closet!

Jason first took down all the closet walls expect one… for Tucker.

This boys bedroom remodel room size was HUGE… 8 x 20 feet.

Can you believe that is the same room?!!! Crazy!

Honestly the final reveal for this boys bedroom remodel was even better than I imagined.

DIY Bead Board Ceiling for the Boys Bedroom Remodel

The first thing Jason did after taking down a lot of the half closet walls was patch the walls & put up the bead board ceiling.

Jason added extra strips of wood to help hold up the bead board.

The boards were really heavy to hold up and gluing and screwing the sides was not enough to hold them.

It was way more work than we originally thought… Unfortunately that is often the case when remodeling but the ceiling looks great and in the end only cost about $200!

We replaced the ugly fluorescent lights and replaced it with a lighted ceiling fan & we got lucky when we found a hidden air conditioning and heater duct.

So thankful we don’t have to add more duct work to the room or call an HVAC guy!

I love how clean & bright his boys bedroom remodel looks now.

We then painted the walls our favorite light cool tan, Sherwin Williams Kestral White.

DIY Bunk Beds for a Boys Bedroom Remodel

Jason started building bunk beds for Tucker.

It will be great to have an extra bed when family & friends come to stay!

Tuck keeps talking about his two beds… he’s so excited!

We kept the bunk bed ladder from the bigger boys original bunk beds.

We added lights & outlets to each of the bunk beds so Tucker & whoever is in the top bunk can read at night.

Now everyone wants one at their bed!

Jason added more bead board to the bottom of the top bunk as well.

DIY Wide Pine Flooring for this Boys Bedroom Remodel

Jason installed & finished the wide pine floors & made the built in bunk beds & custom closet doors.

Don’t they look amazing?

We love the new wide pine floors.

We chose a light warm stain to brighten up the room.  (read about how we did the wide pine floors HERE)

The dresser we found on Craigslist.

I love my Craigslist finds

I am not sure about the faux denim look but the size fits perfectly in the wall & the depth is small so it doesn’t protrude into the room too much allowing lots of floor space for Tucker to push his cars around.

Jason made a letter sign using the old wood sheathing from the house leftover from when he put the window in.

It’s one of my favorite things in the room!

I love the history & look of old reclaimed wood, a letter is from Pottery Barn kids.

DIY New Window Seat & Built in Bookcases for this Boys Bedroom Remodel

There was no window in the original closet.

Here is that before… (read about it HERE)

So we added one & Jason made the built in bookcase and window seat.

How to Make a Built in Bookcase - Tucker's Room

Tucker & I organized his books, cars & brought in some Playmobils.

It is so nice to have most of his toys in his room!

The beautiful pine hutch fits perfectly in the old closet nook we kept.

The picture on the wall is an old paint by number painting made by my dad!!!

We brought Tucker’s red chair up to his room so more of the kids can hang out together.

DIY Pallet Barn Door for this Boys Bedroom Remodel

Jason made the pallet barn door out of 2 1/2 pallets we had sitting in the garage.  (read how to make one of your own HERE)

The kids almost always keep their doors open so a sliding barn door made the most sense and adds so much character to the room.

The barn door hardware turned out great and we would recommend it.

We purchased it from amazon (6FT Black Country Barn Wood Steel Sliding Door Hardware Closet Set Antique Style)

  1. Wow! What a transformation!!! I love everything about it…the window sit, ceiling, letter sign and the bed. I found you at Work it Wednesday and will be checking out the rest of your blog.

    1. Kim thank you so much for your sweet words about our little man’s room:). His room was a labor of love and there were times I wasn’t sure we would ever finish! I appreciate your stopping by so much! Thank you – Tara

    1. Cynthia thank you so much for your sweet comments about my son’s room and for taking the time to visit and comment!!! You are totally right my husband really does have mad skills (it’s funny I didn’t believe him when we were dating that he could fix up houses:) . Hope you are having a great week and take care, Tara

  2. Your husband is very talented and did a great job on making this a room your son will want to play in and feel like its his own. I’m justs a little curious that with a house the size you have why wasn’t there a bedroom he could have used. You didn say how many children you have so that might be the reason. Does his bedroom open into your bedroom or does he have doorway that opens into a hallway.? Great job on oening the closet up to have more floor space and still have everything Tucker needs.

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and for your sweet comments Sue! We have 4 kids and lots of family that visit so it was important to give our kids their own rooms as well as have room for family that comes as well. His room has 2 exits now:) ….one opens up to a hallway and the barn door opens into one of his bigger brother’s rooms:). Take care, Tara

  3. I found my way here via a link on Hometalk. The post was from Bennett’s Room, and I HAD to see the rest of your Makeover’s and Projects! I am blown away. What you guys have accomplished is absolutely Amazing! I can’t believe the Closet into Bedroom. The built in bunk beds, the shelves and window seat are incredible. I almost want that room and I’m grown! Every room looks like a magazine add featuring custom architecture. I Adore your home. Congratulations to both of you for all the hard work, especially with small children in the house. Your Home is Beautiful and the rooms are so Creative and Stunning! I would have never even thought you could move doors and walls like that. That is so Awesome! You’re my new Heros!
