Cedar post wooden Christmas houses!!!

Just recently I have been seeing these simple and beautiful post wooden Christmas houses online & in magazines.

I loved how simple they are but wanted to make some a little fancier but also more personal.

I also noticed that most of the houses had roofs but no chimneys, what Christmas house doesn’t have a fireplace chimney, right? 🙂

We made our houses with leftover cedar posts from the fence we added soon after we moved into our farmhouse.

Cedar is the best because it smells fantastic…to me anyway… and it resists bugs.

If you don’t have leftover cedar posts at your house you can buy a cedar post for under $20 & make a couple houses with it.

Regular untreated posts are even cheaper at the home improvement stores.

They just won’t smell as nice.

Step by Step Instructions for How to Make a DIY Wooden Christmas House

Wooden Christmas House Size Range from 9″ tall by 7″ wide to 13″ tall by 25″ wide

Step ONE – Cut the Cedar Posts to the Height You Want

First we cut the posts to the height we wanted.

We wanted to make sure they were tall enough to see over the garland and greens I knew I would add to my mantel.

The smallest wooden Christmas house we made is about 9 inches and the tallest 17 inches.

Obviously you can make yours any size you want.

We also knew wanted to make ours at least two post wide so I could draw windows and doors on them.

We kept the houses just one post deep so we could ensure they would fit on any of the fireplace mantels in our house.

Step TWO – Use a Table Saw to Cut the Front of the Cedar

We zipped the front of the post houses down on the table saw so the front would be flush.

Step THREE – Cut an Angle on Each Cedar Post

We cut an angle in each roof with a mitre saw.

Step FOUR – Screw Wooden Christmas House Together

We drilled holes into the sides of the wooden Christmas house & screwed them together with 4 inch screws.

We added wood putty to the holes.

Step FIVE – Create Chimneys for each Wooden Christmas House

We added chimneys to each house to give them a little more character.

We also made some dormer windows for our current farmhouse.

After sanding the houses down I glue gunned the chimneys & windows to each house.

Step SIX – Draw Windows & Doors on Your DIY Wooden Houses

Using a ruler & pencil I “roughly” drew windows & doors on the houses.

Next I used a chalk marker to trace over the pencil lines.

We decided not add any poly to the cedar because we didn’t want to loose the cedar smell on our DIY Wooden Christmas House.

*The special more personal thing we did with these houses is we made one to represent each house we have lived in together.  You can click on each house name to see the how true to the original house we were*

  1. Tara, thank you for sharing. I love the little wooden houses. They would be adoreable in anyones home; but even more-so in yours because of the memories you have in each one. What a wonderful idea.

    1. Hi Carol! It was really fun to make them resemble the houses we’ve lived in:). Thanks so much for your sweet comments!!! Have a wonderful week and take care, Tara

  2. Tara these are seriously adorable. I like how solid and sturdy they are like a grown up version of the little wooden toys. You’ll have these for many years to come and always remember your history through them. Happy Holidays!

  3. Tara, these houses are adorable. As soon as I saw the pictures, I loved them, but then I read about how each one is made to resemble a house you’ve lived in, and I loved them even more!! Job well done. 🙂
