I am excited to share the built in desk we added to our son’s bedroom.

We gutted his bedroom and have been slowly putting it back together.

Instructions for How to Make a DIY Desk Against a Wall

The Bedroom Wall Before

To start the built in desk we had to first close off the second doorway into the room.

The was no reason to have a doorway into the next bedroom so we closed it off because we need the wall space.

Building the DIY Built in Desk & the Reclaimed Wood We Chose

To build the desk we used some wood from the old portion of our house that had been removed with room/door alterations.

I just the love the character and texture the old wood brings.

For the desk top we used 2 – 2x10s which Jason screwed together using his Kreg Jig (Kreg R3 Jr. Pocket Hole Jig System).

The reclaimed boards were almost 6 feet long so perfect for a desk!

We used some old original 2x4s that were removed when we changed Bennett’s doorway.

We screwed these right to the wall and cut some smaller angled boards for some decoration.

We used already primed pieces of wood from Home Depot for the built in shelves above the desk.

Building the Bookshelves Above the DIY Built in Desk

We decided to paint the shelves white to brighten up the room with the Benjamin Moore Hale navy paint as the background and to match the built in shelves that were already here.

We added a library light (Canarm ICW299A01ORB10 Taylor 1-Bulb Wall Mount Track Light, Oil Rubbed Bronze) to the top of the shelves to brighten up the work space.

DIY Cork board Above the DIY Built in Desk

We added a cork board to the back of the desk so Ben could have a spot to hang pictures and artwork.

Amazon sells rolls of cork that we’ve used for various projects.

These work great for DIY large cork boards (Manton Natural Cork Roll 4′ x 3′ x 3/8″ – Thicker tacking surface).

Bennett really wanted to have a chair that spins and wheeled around the room.

This chair does spin I put my foot down on the wheels… 🙂

  1. Very practical and pretty Tara. I like that you painted it white, it goes nicesly with your infamous Navy walls! I’m sure Bennett must be so happy to have a little space of his own, even if you don’t let him roll around. 😉
