5 Tips How to Stay Warm in Winter #winter #energysavingtips https://lehmanlane.net

I wanted to share 5 ways we stay warm in winter in our drafty old farmhouse without turning up the thermostat.

We keep our thermostat pretty low during the day and even lower at night so I have had to find ways to stay comfortable without spending lots of money.

Tip ONE – How to Stay Warm in Winter while in Bed

3 Words… Hot Water Bottles

Why do people not use these anymore???

Hot water bottles are fantastic.  They are inexpensive, last for many years & stay warm all night long!!!

A few years ago, I bought Jason one for Christmas & he thought it was silly.

It took a really cold night for him to be OK to try it and since then he was sold!

All you have to do is fill your hot water bottle with hot water & your set.

I have since bought enough for everyone to have one in their beds, even Moose.

I even take out a hot water bottle to keep the chickens warm in winter in their chicken coop

My kids line up to have theirs filled up on the cold nights!

You can find them on sale at Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware after Christmas but you can also find them on Amazon.

Tip TWO – Start a Fire to Keep Warm in Winter

Having a fire to help keep warm is a no brainer.

When our fireplaces or wood stove is on, our home heater doesn’t turn on.

It is amazingly cozy and relaxing to sit next to a warm fire.

And it saves us a TON of money on our home heating bills!

And during the years we lived in a house without a fireplace… I have found that even simple thing like a lit candle or oil lantern made me feel warmer!

Tip THREE – A Warm Drink to Keep You Warm in Winter

Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon, and hot chocolate at night is how I stay warm in winter.

For my sister’s wedding shower we had high tea and ever since then I have been drinking more tea in the afternoon.

I found that I like my tea a lot better seeped in a teapot with fresh tea leaves rather than an ordinary mug with a tea bag in it.

Tip FOUR – Warm Clothes & Footwear to keep Warm in Winter

Slippers & Sweaters my go to clothing attire in the winter.

Keeping something warm on really makes me feel cozy whether I am outside or inside our house.

I always make sure to have my feet covered and my UGG or LL Bean slippers are just the best at keeping my feet warm in winter.

Tip FIVE – Warm Blankets for How to Keep Warm in Winter

Fleece Blankets & Wool Blankets are the best at keeping you warm in winter whether in bed or watching a movie on the sofa.

Everyone in my house has their own favorite fleece or wool blanket to keep them warm when watching TV, reading a book or sleeping in their beds.

  1. I fully agree with your tips Tara! Although it is not as cold where I am , we do have a lot of humidity in the winter that seeps into our bones. The fireplace is a must to get rid of the excess dampness., plus it’s a good companion.

    1. Glad I am not the only one to enjoy my warm beverages all day long Johlene! Although yours I am sure are way more pretty & delicious:). Take care, Tara

  2. Honestly felt so cozy just reading this! Great ideas! We’ve been freezing lately and finally just hiked up our heat (and the next day it ended up being 60 degrees out haha). So curious about the hot water bottles!

    1. Ha, thanks Joy! The hot water bottles really work. I totally encourage you to give them a try! Have a great rest of your week and stay warm:). Tara

  3. My husband and I discovered flannel sheets years ago and thought we were in heaven…until we added an electric blanket to the top of them! We turn it on to heat up the bed before we get in then turn it off for the night. As warm and cozy as you want it.
We also each have a heated throw. We love these too as I keep the house temp at 67 during the winter. I wouldn’t want to be without any of these lovely things I mentioned!
