Although we live in a century old farmhouse over the years previous owners had stripped away of the original character that had originally been here.

Since we moved in over 3 years ago we have slowly been adding back that much needed farmhouse character through many DIY easy house projects.

DIY House Projects ONE – New Wide Pine Wood Floors

All of the 2nd floor in our home was covered in mismatched and old dirty carpet.

Unfortunately when we pulled up the carpet much of the hardwood floors had been painted and were in terrible shape & could not be saved.

We love the look of wide floor boards so for budget reason we decided to add unfinished wide pine floors to our farmhouse as the ultimate DIY House Projects for our floors.

These floors are very similar to floors we have seen in old farmhouses around here.

We also kept and refinished the original pine stairs in our farmhouse.

DIY House Projects TWO – Bead Board Ceilings

Plaster ceilings can crack and separate from the ceiling over time especially in homes that have not been taken care of.

Rather than taking down our peeling and cracking ceilings we decided to cover them with tongue and groove bead board ceiling in the boys bedrooms.

The bead board is strong enough to hold up the old ceiling as well as look great.

We also added vinyl bead board to our farmhouse bathroom.

*Bonus: the rooms that we have added bead board too are considerably warmer because less of the warm air is escaping out of our roof.

DIY House Projects THREE – New Wood Doors and Doorways

For some odd reason EVERY single bedroom in our farmhouse was missing a door… Why?

All of our kids bedrooms now have doors, Yay!

So rather than add back plain doors with no panels we added solid wood doors that had a LOT of character.

  1. Hi Tara, I stumbled across your blog because I’ve been trying to weigh the pros and cons of doing wide pine floors. I live in an area with lots of historic homes and I love the wide pine floors! And yours look beautiful! I’m curious how yours are holding up after a couple years… is the wear and tear from kids giving them a nice patina or are they starting to look rough? If we go for the wide pine, we would do it the way you did… inexpensive boards from LL and install and finish them ourselves. Did you do any sort of sealant on the underside to prevent cupping?
    Thanks! Lauren

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by to check out my blog Lauren! Overall we are really happy with the wide pine floors. Over time the stain has darkened and they look more and more like the old pine floors found in so many farmhouses around here. They were a lot of work to install but we love the look of the wide floor boards. The floors are in great shape and we haven’t had any problems with the kids being too hard on them in any way and have had no problems with cupping. We did not use any kind of sealant. The floors in the bedrooms and laundry room are still in great shape with only a few minor dings and scratches on them after 4+ years. However, I should mention that there is a spot in our hallway stairs that our crazy 3 year old dog jumps and races down that has left a few larger scratch marks on the boards from his nails. If you have an active dog in your home than it’s definitely something to consider. We plan on sanding the boards down in our hallway in a few years when he gets a little older :). Hope this helps with your questions, Tara
